Some of the rivers, fields, and grasslands that buffalo thrived upon are now divided between government and opposition control. Displacement, bombings, and farmers selling their animals for slaughter to make ends meet have all contributed to the decline. There is very limited data related to biodiversity loss or<br>ecosystem service-livelihood dynamics in this geographical area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull has-parallax\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim\"><\/span><div role=\"img\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-860 has-parallax\" style=\"background-position:50% 50%;background-image:url(https:\/\/agricultural-voices.sussex.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Buffaloes-1-scaled.jpg)\"><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Conflict and Fragile Ecosystems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The project &#8220;Conflict and fragile ecosystems: building capacity to address biodiversity loss in Northwest Syria&#8221;&nbsp;was funded by a seed corn grant awarded by the University of Sussex Business School. The AVS team collected data on biodiversity conservation and the role of water buffalo in ecosystem services for vulnerable communities in Northwest Syria. We focused on endemic species at risk of extinction which represent an important resource for farmers\u2019 livelihoods. For more information listen to the AVS podcast episodes linked below. This is endemic species of goat, and therefore, the purity of this breed is slowly disappearing and reducing in the region.
